After qualifying at Carlisle College in 1994, I started my career at Armathwaite Hall Spa, where I met my husband Alan. After leaving I went to work at a top salon in South West Scotland. After gaining valuable training, skills & experience at both salons, I decided to move back to Carlisle after the birth of my daughter Gemma.
I started working in the city at Salon Elysee, where I started building a clientele base, who are still with me today. I opened my first business partnership Escape in 2000 & my second business Beauty by S&S in 2002 whilst 7 months pregnant with Sophie. Finally, in 2007 I opened Beauty@SoLo in Friars Court, where I have had many happy & successful years. I feel I am very lucky to not only love my job, but to be able to work for myself.
I have worked for Caci-International since 2003 using various machines over the years, we currently have ‘The Synergy Non-Surgical Active Aging System’ – SPED Dual Action Technology, Microcurrent, Micro-Dermabrasion & LED Light Therapy, these facials are popular with celebrities & give fantastic results.
To reinforce the Caci machine’s results in the salon, I trained in the International Institute of Active Aging- Environ Skincare in 2011. This enabled me to carry out professional treatments in the salon as well as recommending products for homecare to optimise results. I specialise in helping to treat skin conditions alongside helping to slow down the ageing process & maintaining a healthy skin through professional salon treatments, products & supplements from the Advanced Nutritional Programme.
I feel I am very lucky to not only love my job, but to be able to work for myself. I have a real passion for it, there are no two days the same, I have a great variety of treatments & clients, some have become good friends. In 2016 I completed my ‘Certificate in Education’ with UCAS & started teaching Beauty & Complementary Therapies at Newton Rigg in Penrith, which I really enjoyed. I did this for five years until the college closed in July 2021, in that time I trained many students that have gone onto gain jobs in the beauty industry & open their own businesses.
I currently work part-time in the salon & help care for Gemma’s two children while she is on shift as a midwife. In my spare time Alan and I frequently travel to Lancashire to visit Sophie, who works there as a paramedic.
Beauty Therapist – NVQ 3 in Beauty Therapy
Joanne started working at Solo in 2008, she achieved her NVQ level 3 at Kendal College through an apprenticeship, alongside working & training at the salon for two years where she passed her qualifications and was also awarded ‘Student of the Year’.
Joanne excels in everything she does, her dedication, determination and passion for her job has earned her a good clientele base & is now self-employed at SoLo. She specialises in Brow Lamination a technique that is the eyebrow treatment for the fullest, bushiest brows & is also the only therapist is the salon that carries out Korean Fire Cupping. Cupping is a deep tissue massage that can provide instant relief from muscular pain, easing those aches & pains. Joanne has also joined Sue & Tracie in offering Caci Facials, alongside our Environ Facials & Cool Peels she brings a wealth of knowledge to the team.
Joanne has two daughters Lauren who is a Radiographer & Raya who attends school. They enjoy quality time together with their dog Murphy, often heading to the Lake District for long leisurely walks.
Beauty Therapist – NVQ 3 in Beauty Therapy
I studied Beauty Therapy at Carlisle College in 2005, where I was awarded with ‘Student of the Year’. Whilst studying I worked for Sue part-time at Beauty by S&S. Where I gained much more hands-on-experience. I went onto work there full-time upon completion of my course & in a short time had built up an impressive clientele base, most of whom are still with me today.
I was thrilled when a vacancy arose for a self-employed beauty therapist at Beauty@SoLo and started working here in February 2008.
I not only love my job, I really value my clients, most of them have become good friends. My job is different from any other, I like to make people feel better about themselves. I have a bubbly personality, which makes people feel comfortable & at ease. My honesty & down-to-earth manner makes me popular with clients of all ages.
I am a skincare specialist in both the International Institute Active Aging – Environ Skincare & Caci-International Synergy Facial System. I specialise in waxing, lash perming/lifting & gel nails.
I have a daughter Rachel who is a pharmacy dispenser, I married her dad Stu, my soul mate after he left the Royal Navy, in Sorrento Italy in May 2010, joined by my friends & family. In my spare time I enjoy hill walking & paddle boarding in the Lake District, as well as travelling & exploring new places.
